sockapalooza sock stuff

Do you have certain patterns planned for some of the yarns? Do you buy yarn and then choose a pattern?

Not generally. Most of the time, I buy yarn because it's beautiful & on sale &/or a good price &/or for the memories associated with said yarn - Cape Cod yarn from Knit Picks because of spending birthdays on the Cape as a kid, or the Opal yarn we picked up in Maine when we were there for Jon's birthday. I buy solids obsessively, even if I have a few skeins of the same same solid color already, because I love fair isle & mosaic socks, not to mention scrap socks, not to mention using solids for heels & toes. So I buy a lot of solid yarns.

Sometimes, though, I do see a skein of yarn & instantly see socks - maybe not the exact pattern, but I may see a knit/purl combo or a simple 4 round lace repeat, or something much more complicated.

Does a certain sock yarn you have in your stash take you back to a certain event? (where you were when you bought/received it? what was going on in your life at the time!)

Oh yeah, as I said above! I may not remember what I wore yesterday or what I ate - or even what I did, but I generally can tell you where I got the yarn, for how much, etc. I have a ton of vintage wool/nylon sock yarn, and I can tell you "I got that lot of yarn at salvation army in Linwood. They were marked 50 cents each, but that day all the red tags were 50% off, so I bought every skein they had (even the ones that were 100% nylon) because I knew I'd knit them up someday, and the price couldn't be beat." I even remember that Jon found a Garfield he didn't have to add to his collection that same day. I have another stack of vintage sock yarn - same brands, some similiar colors & some different - at a yard sale in the same area as salavation army, but about 6 months later. I hadn't used any of the original yarn yet, but it was a pretty big bag of yarn for $1, along with tapestry wool (that I use for CIC socks). How can one gal go wrong?

Every stash tells a story!
