2 needle knitted vintage socks
Quick Knit Socks – “Two needle socks that require only two ounces of yarn”
“If you wish, Red Heart “Sayelle” may be used instead of Knitting Worsted. Always be sure to check your gauge before starting any garment.”
Directions are given for small size (8 – 8.5). Changes for Medium (9-9.5) and Large (10-10.5) Sizes are in parentheses.
Coats & Clark’s Red Heart Knitting Worstened, 4 Ply, 2 ounces of No. 230 Yellow for all sizes.
Knitting Needles, 1 Pair No. 8 & No. 10.5
Gauge: 4 Sts = 1 In
5 rows = 1 In
Starting at cuff with no. 10.5 needles, cast on 28 sts for all sizes. Change to No. 8 needles and work in k2, p2 ribbing for 3 inches. Change to No. 10.5 needles and work in st st (k1 row, p1 row) until total length is 5 in, ending with a p row.
Heel – First Half first row: K1, (with yarn in back of work sl 1, k 1) 3 times; slip next 14 stitches on a stitch holder for instep, sl remaining 7 sts on a safety pin.
2nd row: sl 1, p 6. Next 12 rows: Working over the 7 sts on needle only, repeat last 2 rows alternately.
To Turn Heel: 1st row: K1, k2 tog, k 1, turn. 2nd row: sl 1, p2.
3rd row: k2, k2 tog, k 1, turn. 4th row: sl 1, p 3. 5th row: k3, k2 tog, turn.
6th row: sl 1, p 3. Slip these 4 stitches on a safety pin. Break off.
Second Half of Heel: Slip the 7 sts from first safety pin on a No. 10.5 needle. With right side facing, attach yarn and k7.
1st row: P1, (with yarn in front of work, sl 1, p 1) 3 times. 2nd row: sl 1, k across.
Next 12 rows: Rep last 2 rows.
To Turn Heel: 1st row: P 1, p2 tog, p 1, turn. 2nd row: sl 1, k2. 3rd row: p2, p2 tog, p 1, turn.
4th row: sl 1, k 3. 5th row: p3, p2 tog, turn. 6th row: sl 1, k 3. Slip these 4 sts on a safety pin. Break off.
With right side facing, sl the 4 sts from first half safety pin on no. 10.5 needle, attach yarn and k4, pick up and k8 sts along inner edge of heel, k across 14 instep sts, pick up and k8 sts along inner edge of heel, k 4 sts from other heel safety pin – 38 sts.
Instep: 1st row: p 12, place a marker on needle, p 14, place another marker on needle, p 12. 2nd row: K across to within 2 sts before next marker, k 2 tog, slip marker, k to next marker, slip marker, sl 1, k 1, psso, k to end of row.
3rd row: sl markers, p aross. Re last 2 rows alternately 4 times more – 28 stitches. Remove markers. Con in st st until length from center back of heel is 6 (6.5, 7) inches, ending with a k row.
To Shape Toe: 1st row: p 6, place a marker on needle, p 2, place a marker on needle, p 12, place a amarker on needle, p 2, place a marker on needle, p 6.
2nd row: * K to within 2 sts before next marker, k 2 tog, sl marker, k 2, slip marker, sl 1, k 1, psso, rep from * once, k to end of row.
3rd row: sl markers, p across. Rep last two rows until 12 stitches remain. Break off, leaving an 18 in length of yarn. Thread this through remaining sts. Pull up tightly and fasten.
Sew sole & back seams. Press through a damp cloth.
